The job of a pharmacy technician is very important in a job where medicine is dispensed. Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, they will deliver prescriptions to customers as well as assist in other work. Anyone considering this position as a career needs to research things such as job duties, education required and so forth.

People who are interested in establishing a career in the medical field often start out this way. This position allows them to become experienced in drug dispensing as well as learning things such as looking up the customer's medical history to be sure the drug is safe for them. In addition, there are countless other responsibilities involved.

Searching for information regarding this type of career will show that training usually lasts 6 to 9 months. Studies will include mathematics, drugs, medical and pharmaceutical terminology, compounding of prescribed medications and other things. This is an entry-level position which opens the door to many medical education possibilities.

Many people who started out in this job used it as a spring board to advance to something else in the medical arena. It might be advancing to Registered Pharmacist, entering a higher medical program or a number of other things. It is excellent experience to learn all about drug dispensing and checking a customer's medical history for the safety of the drug when intermixed with something else they are taking.

Assigned tasks, such as bagging and arranging medications for pick-up by patients as well as, in many cases, retrieving messages from the all-night phone system, directing calls to the pharmacist and answering non-medically related questions for customers who visit the store is part of the job. A non-licensed individual is not allowed to provide medical advice or information. He or she is trained in the proper procedures for advising individuals on the type of physician or specialist who will be able to help them.

When an individual has a question about medication or dosages, the professional will have the Pharmacist meet with them to provide the important information regarding dosages, contra-indications, etc. The professional will be able to learn about what the Pharmacist does and how the store is run. However, their primary duty is to provide excellent customer service and maintain a proper inventory of non-prescription, or over-the-counter medications.

Record keeping is essential in all areas of the medical field and especially in a pharmacy. The technician will be expected to maintain these records and keep them updated. In addition, keeping an inventory and ordering supplies is an essential part of keeping things running smoothly. If there is a promotional sale for over the counter medications, he or she will be expected to participate.

One way to decide if the career of a pharmacy technician is desirable is to talk to someone who is already in the field. Such a person can not only give advice, regarding duties connected with the job, but advise how it can be used to pursue a higher career in the pharmaceutical field. Having experience in an actual pharmacy gives a person a 'heads up' regarding obtaining further education and a degree. Research will show that many people in high ranking medical and pharmaceutical positions started out in this kind of a job.
